Sister Hijack: Brave the Shave Update

Image

Earlier this year my little sister told our family that she was going to shave her head to raise money for childhood cancer.  A few months ago I decided that while I couldn’t shave my head, I could donate a quilt to raise money.  I thought I’d use this blog to help her advertise to her friends and school on Facebook.  What I didn’t expect was how many times she would end up texting me asking, “Do you know __________? They just donated!!!!”  Every time that I told her, “Yes!  They are my quilting friend!!!!” OR “Yes, they’re my friend from work/high school/college!!!!”  I got a little teary-eyed over how amazing my circle of friends truly is.  Since so many of you supported my sister’s efforts to raise money, she wanted to update you on her event and say THANK YOU!

From Z:

The Brave the Shave went better than I could have hoped!  First, I was blown away by the amount of money we raised – right before the event we had a total of $8,703.  (We originally set the goal for $5,000, unsure if we would even reach that.)  Now, almost a week later, we have over $10,000 dollars.  Everyone’s support and generous donations have overwhelmed me, and I know I will never be able to properly thank everyone who contributed to our event and its success.

My sister’s beautiful quilt was a huge success and SO many people donated in the hopes to win it.  In the end, our dear friend Jennifer won the quilt.  Jennifer has had her own struggle with cancer and has been so extremely supportive of me and the event since it’s conception so long ago.  Although I wish everyone who participated and everyone who donated could get a quilt, I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out!  Of course, I still think my sister should make many more charity quilts, so your chance could come again…

Thank you to everyone who donated!  Every donation, no matter how much, is going to a cause that is so important and if I had to shave my head the price was small to put a dent in childhood cancer.

Finally, to all of you quilters who have been such good friends to my sister Ashley, whether in real life or through the blogosphere, I want to tell you a very special thank you.  I know that none of you needed the quilt – you can make your own – and none of you know me, so your generosity is especially appreciated.   No wonder she loves you guys so much!

Love, Z

And, in case you’re wondering, here are some photos of her event:

Whatcha gonna do with all that hair?

Bald looks good in our family.  Z and our Dad.

Z and our cousin Chelsea who donated her amazing hair skills to the event!

Finally, Z and our sister Mary-Austin.  I wish I could have been there!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  And, I have to say that while I’m always proud of my sisters and the women they are becoming, I was in awe of my sister last week and I couldn’t help but cry when I watched the video she sent me of the event.  It goes without saying that you are beautiful, Z.  Thank you for sharing your inner beauty with the world.
